Based on Korczak's diary and other writings, and on interviews with surviving orphans and students he cared for, Lifton tells how the doctor devoted his life to deprived Jewish and Polish children in Warsaw, founded and directed a model orphanage, and pushed for Polish-Jewish reconciliation even as national animosity in pre-World War II Poland was growing.
