Although immensely popular as a screenwriter and poet in the Forties and Fifties, sometimes Surrealist Prevert (1900-77) has not received much serious attention recently. This bilingual anthology should win him an American audience. Zinnes has almost lovingly translated 41 poems from seven collections, effectively conveying the images and verbal rhythms, losing hardly any humor and irony, and even finding equivalents for many of Prevert's strategic rhymes. Prevert's defense of basic decency is now just as moving in English. Marilyn Gaddis Rose, SUNY at Binghamton
