When the first edition of this study was begun, Robert Frost was still with us, enjoying the final years of his immense and deserved popularity. His living presence offered the scholar of 1962 a precious sense of connection with the modern movement in American poetry which extended back to its earliest beginnings in 1912-13. That continuity has been broken almost totally today. The literary moment recedes further into history, with Archibald MacLeish now perhaps our sole surviving link with the early days. By the time the first edition was in print, Robert Frost had died, but the anticipated wave of material in print concerning him and his work had not yet gathered its full strength. During the years since Frost's death, much has been printed that has made a revision of this work not only desirable but mandatory.
