YA-- Thoreau said, ``Books must be read as deliberately and reservedly as they were written.'' This advice applies to this title as well. Bickman offers the standard chronology of Thoreau's life and works and a useful annotated bibliography of books and essays by and about him. In between, he weighs the importance of Walden then and now and provides insight into its structure, vision, and philosophy. His close reading of the language or root meanings in it is by far the best chapter in assisting readers to make meaning of the text.
