"Silent Bell" is the story of Stuart Stern and Melina Progonos, whose love conquered all, except the times they lived in.

Stuart Stern is a forty-seven-year-old journalist who is content to wander the country alone reporting the news and then seclude himself in his one-bedroom condo - content until he receives a note from Melina, his long lost love; a love that had blossomed amid the conflicting passions of life on a college campus in the turbulent atmosphere of the 1969-70 school year.

Their love overcame crucial social differences that would have torn most couples apart. But they could not overcome the divisive issues of the sixties, especially a defining moment of that era: "Kent State."

Twenty-five years later, Stuart calls the sixties "that wasted decade" and now wonders how he could have ever let the contentions of those times become more important to him than "the most perfect woman I could ever hope to meet."

As he reads and rereads Melina's letter, he recalls the intimacy of their love as it grew against the backdrop of the growing student anti-war movement. But to reminisce for very long would force him to ponder his own complicity in an event that shocked a nation and silenced a love.

Melina's invitation to meet her at the twenty-fifth anniversary commemoration of the Kent State incident sends Stuart's mind on an introspective journey. Why does Melina want to see him again after so many years? How did he let her slip away in the first place? How has he let his own life slip by? Could she ever love the indifferent person he has now become? Is it worth resurfacing the horror of a past he long ago buried in order to reunite with the only woman he ever truly loved?

While examining how a significant historical event affected two individuals, "Silent Bell" is a story about the fragile nature of love: how hard it is to find a perfect love, how easy it is to throw away, and how it may return to change our lives in unsuspecting ways if we keep ourselves open to its possibilities.

From the Publisher:

A man lives an empty life: alone, disenchanted, void of emotion.

Only one woman can restore his faith in love and renew his hope for the future.

But there's no way he can open his heart to her without opening the unbearable wounds of the past.

From the Back Cover:

Melina's letter with the first-class plane ticket is brief but full of emotion. For two people who haven't seen each other in twenty-five years, it's amazing how few words are necessary to bridge that span of time. It's the 25th Anniversary. Meet me at the Bell. May 4th. Noon. Want to see you. Need to talk to you. It's been too long. No more excuses. This is the year. Call me. She had signed her name but it wasn't necessary. Who else would want to remember Kent State?
