"Children with Deformities" contains twenty-two stories collected by Lewis Cozen, M.D., which document how children with physical handicaps impact their families. The stories are fictional to preserve anonymity, as they reflect the problems these children and, more importantly, their families encounter.
Dr. Cozen analyzes sixteen different diseases which affect the skeleton, some of which are congential and some which are acquired later in life.
Most of the stories are about families with children who were born physically deformed, but some of the characters were not diagnosed until adulthood. In either case, the rest of the family must sacrifice overwhelming amounts of time, energy, and resources to help the physically deformed person function at their maximum potential.
The stories range from triumphant to tragic, with each family trying to cope with the disability. Some of the children rise above their diagnoses and lead happy, productive lives, while others struggle and succumb to an early death.
Though some are tragic, the majority of stories are powerfully uplifting, as we see many families eventually overcome the intense pressures they face and rear a child who exceeds their expectations.
