The noted author of a number of useful genealogy handbooks (e.g., Directory of Family Associations 1993-94 and Country Courthouse Book, LJ 9/1/90, both from Genealogical Pub.) has given us another outstanding sourcebook. This third edition allays all concerns raised by the first edition of 1991, which, though a good beginning, seemed overly ambitious in terms of being able to stay up-to-date. The only way to make this resource better now would be to offer it on CD-ROM or in another automated format. A third larger than its predecessor, this edition features hundreds of new entries and updates to more than 80 percent of the older entries. Following the format of earlier editions, the volume provides names, addresses, phone numbers, hours, and publications for genealogical organizations in four broad areas: national, state (including the American Trust Territories), ethnic and religious, and special resources. Special resources includes lineage and hereditary societies, surname registries, adoption information, immigration research centers, computer interest organizations (including bulletin boards), genealogical computer software, and other topics. The outstanding indexing includes both an index to periodicals and newsletters and a general index. This national yellow pages for genealogical research assembles a tremendous amount of useful and current information for ready-reference use at libraries and in homes and is an essential purchase for both markets. Very highly recommended.?Judith P. Reid, Library of Congress
