Gr 5 Up-Tuyen offers captioned diagrams for 18 creatures, from ant to dinosaur, plus a boat, all made from one of eight "basic forms" (not the ones taught in most paperfolding books, except for a fish base-here called "tea bud") with single sheets of origami paper. All are illustrated with a full-color photo, but several, particularly the hedgehog, bee, and lion, are unidentifiable without labels. The diagrams are sure to bewilder novices. Pre-creases, once made, are not shown in subsequent steps; some folding symbols are missing; and, as the same areas of paper often switch colors at different stages, the model in hand never looks exactly like the illustration. Experienced folders might enjoy experimenting with the author's bases, but look for more polished, doable wildlife in John Montroll's books or Alice Gray and Kunihiko Kasahara's Magic of Origami (Japan Publications, 1985).-John Peters, New York Public Library
