It's dollars and sense! If the only thing your children know about money is how to spend it, it's time to teach them a different lesson. Kids are never too young to learn how to create a budget, use their talent to make big bucks, invest their earnings, and donate to charity. They can begin to take stock of their financial fitness with a "money matters to me" quiz: the answers will separate the savers from the squanderers. Then it's time to start making smart decisions, by finding a money mentor, learning from mistakes, and keeping a journal of purchases and longed-for items. Find out all about the history of money (from barter to beyond) and the basics of savings. There's advice on understanding the difference between needs and wants, getting the most from an allowance, becoming an entrepreneur, and sharing the wealth. Plus: personal thoughts from real kids on how money affects their lives!

Jamie Kyle McGillian is a freelance writer who works as an editor for Westchester Parent. She is the author of the self-published Pieces of Lace, a young adult novel, as well as The Busy Mom’s Book of Preschool Activities, Sidewalk Chalk, and Sleepover Party! (all Sterling). She, her husband, and their two daughters earn, save, spend, invest, and donate in Westchester County, NY.From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8-Joining a crowded field, this cheerful treatment of personal finance will hold its own despite some cutesy, cartoonlike color illustrations. After a brief history of money, McGillian covers the usual topics-budgeting, earning, spending, saving, etc.-with effective ideas for resisting consumerism. Oddly, an afterword on the adoption of the euro is included. The writing is clear and lively; even the good advice is less schoolmarmish than usual. Books on this topic abound; the best one is still Neale S. Godfrey's Ultimate Kids' Money Book (S & S, 1998), which has better illustrations. An additional purchase.
