This slim volume offers a reasonable selective overview, made up of good pictures and terse text, of much of the CIA's exotic hardware in use from 1945 through 1970. Although more of historical than contemporary interest (state-of-the-art counterparts of this gear are, quite understandably, still classified information), Melton's effort will be absorbing for anyone with even a mild interest in the history of covert operations or espionage. It will also be a useful reference to writers of cold war spy thrillers; it proves that the late Ian Fleming's imagination was not necessarily working overtime when he equipped James Bond.
