Reviews

A husband-and-wife team who have written a number of woodworking titles for beginners, the Bridgewaters have created another winner. This title, part of Sterling's "Basics" series, offers an excellent introduction to woodcarving. It begins with a description of tools and their care, then moves on to wood selection and the use of knives, axes, and adzes. The major styles of woodcarving (chip, relief, and sculptural) are introduced in short sections that are supplemented with black-and-white photos and drawings. The Bridgewaters' instructions are excellent. Readers are shown how to complete three projects (a rustic country stool, ball-in-a-cage puzzle, and wildfowl decoy) that use many of the techniques described. An excellent and reasonably priced introduction, this title is recommended for public libraries.
