Synopsis
Five biographical and critical sketches of Virginians over the period from 1810 to 1861 document the creation of the South as a concept in American culture. Three were politicians with a literary bent, the other two fiction writers fascinated with politics. They shared a desire to represent the South as a refuge of pastoral and republican order as the post-revolutionary era was transformed by urbanization, industrialization, capitalist expansion, and the concentration of wealth.
