Marisol, who is bilingual, is sometimes overwhelmed when her Spanish-speaking family members and neighbors need her to translate for them.

This touching story will reach out to thousands of families in America whose children spend much of their time translating for relatives and friends. From Booklist:
Ages 4-8. Many first-generation immigrants will recognize this story, whether they are newcomers now, like the people in the Latino community in this bright picture book, or older generations that remember how it was. Marisol is rushing home from school to see to her cat, but on the way she's stopped by adult family members and neighbors who need her to translate from Spanish for them so that they can communicate with shopkeepers and officials in English. Whether she's helping Uncle Tomas bargain with the poultry man, showing her neighbor how to fill out an application form, or speaking for Mama about a problem with the telephone bureaucracy, Marisol translates the words and also interprets the messages across cultures. Sanchez's brightly colored gouache and acrylic paintings show a warm, diverse, bilingual town in the Southwest, where there's sometimes misunderstanding, but there's also community. The role reversal is the drama here, with the child leading adults and acting as intermediary. Immigrant kids will want to talk about this at school and at home. Hazel Rochman
