PreS?On John's third birthday, his father accompanies him to nursery school, bringing along a multilayered cake. The man spends the entire day playing with his son's friends and participating in all of their activities. He has a big smile in each illustration except during nap time?when he snores. Short rhyming verses of minimal text express the child's pleasure at having his dad there. Simple pen-line drawings filled in with watercolor wash show generic faces on characters that can be distinguished only by hair and skin color. Adults and children look alike, except for the fact that the grownups are taller and have larger noses. Layout is extremely busy for the intended audience?there is so much going on visually that it's hard to find the focus on most pages.?Alexandra Marris, Rochester Public Library, NY

Ages 2-4. Although the rhyming text gets a little singsongy (and sometimes mundane), the subject of this picture book is right on target. The narrator is delighted when his father comes to nursery school to help celebrate his third birthday. Along with the rest of the kids, they paint pictures, build towers, and read books. Dad participates fully, even going so far as to settle down for a nap. A party, complete with party hats and a birthday parade, adds zest to a very busy birthday. Brillhart's ink-and-watercolor artwork, featuring a lively gang of children who resemble Lillian Hoban's school kids, has instant appeal. A pleasant choice for the library shelves in preschools, which might want to initiate their own Dad days. Ilene Cooper
