Hardbound. Condition: Very Good. Reprint Edition. Description: Originally published in 1953, this reprint edition is part of the Time-Life World War II Classics series, The Secret War. Pieter Dourlein's account of his short career as a Dutch secret agent offers the excitement of an Alfred Hitchcock thriller: a personable, patriotic young man offers his services to his country, only to find himself a pawn in a merciless game of international intrigue. The book helps untangle Germany's greatest counterespionage triumph and the Allies' most tragic espionage failure. The game at the center of Pieter Dourlein's story had its root in the early years of the war. Following the ouster of British troops from Europe after Dunkirk, Britain's Special Operations began sending agents into occupied countries to organize underground resistance. In early 1942, the Germans captured a radio operator and a saboteur. As they had been instructed, the men supplied the Germans with coding information bud did not divulge their security checks -- deliberate errors introduced into a message to let the receivers know the agent had actually sent it. Using the information the men supplied, the Germans sent their first message in March. London decided to ignore the security checks which they considered an inadequate measure and they began dropping agents directly into Nazi welcoming committees. For the next twenty months, the Germans successfully controlled radio communications -- requesting and receiving more agents and supplies. Includes the publisher's insert.
