Reviews

Gr 3-5-A collection of math games and puzzles designed to help develop problem-solving skills. Concepts are varied, including pattern finding, spatial awareness, computation, and beginning multiplication and division skills, but are presented with no apparent overall arrangement. Children should find enough to interest them in the assortment of mysteries and puzzles; brief notes provide explanations and suggest additional activities. The volume is heavily illustrated with cartoons, photographs, and collages. The illustrations are rather pedestrian and their quality is uneven, but they are colorful and pleasant enough to entice reluctant readers. The book is not as attractive or as sophisticated as Mitsumasa Anno's Anno's Math Games (Philomel, 1987), and the games are not as clever as those in Marilyn Burns's Math for Smarty Pants (Little, 1982). Still, the concepts introduced are important and the puzzles do have child appeal. An additional purchase.-Danita Nichols, New York Public Library
