Anyone who has ever looked for data about a specific geographic location will be impressed with this new reference tool. The editors have surveyed, organized, indexed, and annotated a multitude of serial and recurring sources that focus on numeric data compiled about states and local communities in the United States and its territories. The book includes lists of sources for each state, organized by subject. Appendixes listing nonprint sources of state and local statistics and annotations for each title are nice features. The Statistical Reference Index (SRI), a source with continual updates from Congressional Information Services, covers some of the same territory and is somewhat broader in scope, including, for example, some one-time publications not listed in state and local statistics sources, but it is also considerably more expensive. This reference, which the publisher plans to update annually, is compact, usable, and affordable and will be of great help in public and research libraries.
