This book makes available the wealth of data contained in Cash Box's popular music singles (45 rpm records) charts over a 25-year period. This information, previously available only through a search of the weekly charts themselves, has been completely integrated and accessed via artist and song title entries. No comparable compilation covers as long a time span in one integrated volume for the black contemporary genre. The compilation contains many features not currently available in any other reference tool of its type, most notably week-by-week listing of song chart positions. With many valuable appendices.

Libraries owning The Cash Box Singles Charts, 1950-1981 (1983) and The Cash Box Country Singles Charts, 1958-1982 (1984) will likely want to buy No. 3 in the series. Every single to make the Cash Box r & b (later "black contemporary") singles charts from 1960 through 1984 is included. Arrangement is alphabetical by artist with an index by song title. Locating a single is easier than in Joel Whitburn's competing Top Rhythm & Blues Records, 1949-71 (Record Research, 1972); more serious is Whitburn's failure to issue a new one-volume update. His annual supplements keep coverage current but are costly and inefficient to use. As the Billboard and Cash Box charts since 1971 don't differ much, a wise consumer should purchase the base Whitburn volume for its important pre-1960 coverage, and Albert/Hoffman for single-volume coverage of the 1970s and 1980s.
