Cultural, historical, and economic atlases are only some of the thematic atlases that are being published in record numbers. This book alerts librarians to the value of this increasingly-popular genre, and is a guide to their use in collection development. Among the one hundred titles evaluated in this book are Great Caves of the World, Art Atlas of Britain and Ireland, Atlas of American Sport, Atlas of Human Anatomy, Great Battlefields of the World, Historical Atlas of the Outlaw West, Instant National Locator Guide, Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Census, Women's Atlas of the United States, and Zones of Conflict.

The comprehensive evaluations include bibliographic data, physical descriptions (with height and width in inches), topics and coverage, noteworthy qualities, and citations to reviews in library and subject journals. The introductory section offers recommendations for evaluating, accessing, organizing, and managing thematic atlases for public, academic, and high school libraries.

About the Author:

Diane K. Podell (BS, CCNY; MLS, CUNY; CAS, LIU) is Professor and Periodicals Reference Librarian at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, and an adjunct reference librarian at Queensborough Community College. She began her career as public librarian, and has also taught at the graduate library schools of Queens College, CUNY and Long Island University. She was a major contributor to Volume I of The United States (Facts on File, 1992), one of the Handbooks to the Modern World series.

From Booklist:

Podell, library science professor at Long Island University and reference librarian at Queensborough Community College, intends that her new book assist librarians in selecting thematic atlases. After surveying the atlas holdings of 26 libraries and checking many bibliographic sources, she compiled a list of several hundred atlases. From this, she selected 100 thematic atlases for inclusion. Criteria are that atlases be in English and be intended for use by the nonspecialist. Most of the evaluated sources were published after 1985, but a few are from the early 1980s.

The author provides several chapters of thought-provoking discussion, with observations and opinions regarding the organization and management of atlas collections. The reviews are arranged alphabetically by title, each following a uniform format. They are one to two pages in length and begin by providing complete bibliographic information, including price and ISBN. Also noted are the number and types of maps and information regarding illustrations, bibliographies, time lines, and indexes. A brief section notes the scope and purpose of the atlas. Following this is a listing of the table of contents, sometimes abbreviated to save space. In a section entitled "Noteworthy Qualities," the author provides information on such topics as the reading level of the text, binding quality, references to other titles, and commentary regarding problems, audience, etc. The atlas evaluation concludes with a list of up to six reviews. Interestingly, the author states she read few of the reviews, preferring to make her own judgments regarding the quality of the atlases.

This work concludes with a glossary that defines 19 terms (e.g., chloropleth), a bibliography with 21 citations, and an index of titles by publisher; unfortunately, no addresses are provided. Name-title and subject indexes will assist users in locating appropriate entries.

This is a unique source. The classic atlas references, Atlas Buying Guide by Kister (Oryx, 1984) and General World Atlases in Print by Walsh (Bowker, 1973), are dated and do not cover nearly as many thematic atlases. A highly useful collection-development tool for public, academic, and high school libraries.
