The Phoenix Award is an award made by The Children's Literature Association that honors a book deserving special recognition for its high literary quality and is awarded to a book published 20 years earlier. The award encourages publishers to continue to make such books available and to suggest to readers that they hold dear those traits that have given such books universality and timelessness.
This new volume covers the year 1990 to 1994 and contains the papers presented on the award-winning books, as well as the honor books for each year. Information is provided about each author, including a list of his or her works for children and the acceptance speech given at the annual banquet.
A scholarly work that breathes with the life of a reading community, this outstanding volume is directed at the professionals who attend to children's literature―librarians, teacher educators, and scholars in the modern languages.
Phoenix Award Winners:Enchantress from the Stars (1970); A Long Way from Verona (1971); A Sound of Chariots (1972); Carrie's War (1973); Of Nightingales that Weep (1974).
Phoenix Honor Books: Ravensgill (1970); Sing Down the Moon (1970); The Tombs of Atuan (1971); A Game of Dark (1971); A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver (1973); My Brother Sam is Dead (1974); Listen for the Fig Tree (1974).

Review:

Reading this collection of essays is like browsing in a library that has been carefully selected for our pleasure and interest. You will find yourself wanting to read many of these books, even the ones you already know, as you realize again the achievement of these writers...this is an excellent resource for the professional collection of a school or library... (VOYA)

...a necessary addition to any inclusive children's literature collection. (Lisca)

The pleasures of this volume lie primarily in the sensation of listening in upon a group of informed, articulate debaters as their diverse critical voices discuss each title...a fascinating resource for teachers and students of children's literature and student research in secondary schools. (Teacher Librarian)

...it is important to have at least one copy at a central service point, if only to show that quality is still important. (The School Librarian)
