9780810836235: Safe at Work? Library Security and Safety Issues

Issues of library security have been around for as long as libraries have been in existence. However, only recently have librarians been concerned with the whole realm of library security. In eight chapters, this annotated bibliography covers issues of library safety from the more commonplace concerns over the security of the collection and the safety of the staff and patrons to the less obvious concerns for disaster preparedness, preservation and conservation of materials, wellness issues, and building design.

This thorough bibliography includes a whole host of media including theses and dissertations, Internet sites, videos, sound recordings, conference proceedings, and serials. A comprehensive guide, Safe at Work? fills a gap in library-specific literature. An essential tool for librarians of every stripe, this book provides excellent coverage of issues of vital importance to library administration.

About the Author:

Teri R. Switzer (M.S. Library Science, University of Illinois, M.B.A. Colorado State University) is the Personnel Librarian and Associate Professor at Colorado State University.

From Library Journal:

Contrary to popular perception, libraries are not always quiet, pleasant workplaces. They face lost or damaged materials, threats from both patrons and co-workers, sick building disease, ergonomics concerns, computer hackers, natural disasters, and potential lawsuits. Switzer (Telecommuters: The Workforce of the Twenty-First Century: An Annotated Bibliography, LJ 5/1/97) has compiled a useful, selective bibliography that covers a wide range of problems faced by all variety of librarians. Divided into eight chapters, each section opens with a brief overview, then moves to the listing of books, articles, audiovisual materials, and other items. Chapters one through seven cover safety and security concerns, wellness issues, collection security, computers, facility security, disaster plans, and legal plans. The last chapter lists theses, dissertations, audiovisual materials, conference papers, web sites, and periodicals. All citations include brief, reasonably written annotations. An author, title, and subject index closes the work. Other than working through Library Literature, this is the sole up-to-date list available to directors and library school students needing information on this important topic. Highly recommended.AStephen L. Hupp, Swedenborg Memorial Lib., Urbana Univ., OH
