Judy Cornes closely analyzes the life and work of Stuart Erwin, a popular actor in the thirties and forties, focusing primarily on Erwin's career in motion pictures but also including a brief examination of his work on stage and television. In each of these media Erwin's talent was demonstrated by his subtlety, versatility, cleverness, and honesty. In his private life, though, Erwin was extremely modest, rarely engaging in self-promotion, which contributed to his being overlooked by critics.

This fascinating look into the life and work of Stuart Erwin also includes a bibliography, a comprehensive list of his films, and an index.

About the Author:
Judy Cornes is a Professor of English at Odessa College, Odessa Texas.
From Library Journal:
Actor Erwin's career spanned five decades, but nobody but the most avid classic movie buff is likely to know him by name. Likened to Will Rogers, he missed true movie-stardom despite film credits that included Joe Palooka, Our Town, and Heading for Heaven. He was probably best known for his 1950s TV series, Trouble with Father, but his modesty and lack of self-promotion contributed to his being largely forgotten today. Cornes (English, Odessa Coll.) attempts to right this wrong by presenting a detailed and well-researched analysis of Erwin's life and work. However, that strength is also this book's weakness; it reads like a dissertation and lacks the juicy bits lovers of the celebrity biography genre hunger for. Also, the price is prohibitive for many public libraries. For comprehensive academic libraries. Rosellen Brewer, Monterey Cty. Free Lib., Salinas, CA
