Although teen advisory groups flourish in many libraries, no how-to guidebook has ever been published for the librarians who run them. At last, the activities and policies of actual groups in school and public libraries are described in detail. From funding to bylaws, from starting a new group to rejuvenating an old one, from classic projects to unique roles, from community involvement to voting on adult library boards, Tuccillo covers the wide landscape of teen advisory groups of all stripes and types. Vivid profiles of successful teen groups, organized in public and school library sections, tell each group's story. Sample mission statements, applications, membership cards, parent permission forms, publicity flyers, and newsletters can be borrowed or adapted.

Beyond a wealth of practical advice, Tuccillo also offers inspiration in teens' own words: "I did not expect TAB to be nearly as great as it was," writes a member to his librarian after moving away. "It allowed me to get socially involved and to take an active role in the community. I really enjoyed the discussions dealing with the library renovation. Being involved in such a large project was exciting for someone my age. [In my new community], I ran for the library Board of Trustees and work as a reading tutor. If it were not for you and your library, I never would have considered running or tutoring. I owe a lot of thanks to you." Anyone working directly with teens in school and public libraries will be unable to resist such compelling testaments to the value of library teen advisory groups.

Review:

A comprehensive how-to guide that covers all the bases from theory to practice to nitty-gritty detail....Appendixes and a thorough index round out this invaluable tool for librarians working with teens. (School Library Journal, August 2005)

No teacher-librarian can hope to fill all the needs for teens from the school library, so this title is highly recommended for both school and public librarians, particularly if it leads to real action, excellent programs, and a major draw for teens in the community. In times of drugs and gangs and other major problems, we cannot think of a more important mission for libraries than to help raise the teen animals around them. Bottom line: Highly recommended for teacher-librarians and public librarians. (Teacher Librarian)

Tuccillo, who has headed up a teen advisory group (TAG) for the past quarter century, delivers a new bible for teen services. Library Teen Advisory Groups is our profession's first title about TAGs, and it will surely become one of the great touchstone works on our shelves....A must-read for library staff with an interest in youth participation and input. (Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), (Yals))

I highly recommend the book...this title is a well-presented and very practical guide to getting teens back into and involved in our libraries. I highly commend this title... (Australian Library Journal, February 2007)

In Library Teen Advisory Groups, youth expert Diane P. Tuccillo shares practical advice for librarians running such groups, including how to establish, fund, and run an advisory group, along with profiles of successful teen groups and examples of possible projects. She also includes sample missions statements, applications, membership cards, publicity flyers, and newsletters. (American Libraries)

Tuccillo (University of Mesa Library) offers advice on starting a young adult advisory committee, suggests activities and projects for the committee, and discusses the benefits teenagers gain through their involvement. The experiences and structure of several example teen advisory councils are described, including several active in middle and high school libraries. (Reference and Research Book News)
