9780810850378: Motivational Design: The Secret to Producing Effective Children's Media

When constructing an educational program, the children's media producer's primary task is determining exactly how to motivate her audience. Even the youngest children are now media savvy enough to make these programs a tough sell. This resource offers a unique model for the incorporation of motivational strategy that draws on the 'ARCS' theory of John Keller and the paradigm created by the Children's Television Workshop (fleshed out in Sesame Street). Arnone's Motivation Overlay for Children's Media Producers provides a systematic approach that will ensure that media materials for children will meet both motivational and educational goals. Providing essential tools as well as anecdotal wisdom, this guide will aid media producers, educators, students learning the ropes of video production and Web development, or anyone who is attempting to motivate children to watch...and learn.

About the Author:

Marilyn Arnone is President of Research and Development, and co-founder of Creative Media Solutions, Inc. She has published in leading journals in her field, presented at conferences nationwide, and teaches courses and seminars as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University.

Review:

Marilyn Arnone successfully merges the theoretical and practical in Motivational Design. This is the road map to assure an original idea makes it intact to the finished media product. The "Developmental Snapshots" and "Tips and Tactics" sidebars will be particularly helpful for the novice media producer. (Peter Moller)

A virtual D-I-Y for children's media production. Dr Arnone very nicely blends motivation theory with practical checklists and nitty gritty production details to make an extraordinarily valuable resource. It makes you want to take that idea hiding in the back of your file cabinet and make it happen! (Tony Labriola)

Whatever your answer or solution to the mix of technology, time, and types of activities, Arnone is a worthy read that reminds us how to structure a production activity to achieve maximum benefits....Highly recommended for all of us who think we know everything there is to know about media production and are too overconfident to recall the basics and take a fresh look at our activities and strategies. It is also an excellent read for the novice who wishes to build effective strategies for using media production. Bottom line: Highly recommended. (Teacher Librarian)

Marilyn Arnone certainly has captured the essence of the ARCS model in her personal and engaging style of presenting it in conjunction with the CTW approach to developing children's media. This highly practical book is well illustrated with techniques and examples; and she uses creative ways of including underlying principles of motivation and child development. An excellent book!! (Keller, John M.)

Arnone (educational media, Syracuse U.) presents a practical guide for anyone who produces media content for children, including television and multimedia producers, communications students, writers, and educators designing media for the classroom. Arnone explains the Children's Television Workshop (CTW) model for children's media development and John Keller's (Florida State U.) ARCs model of motivational design and its specific components, which she combines to create an integrative and systematic approach. The text concludes with a case study using the CTW and ARCs models to redesign a children's television program produced in New York. (Reference & Research Book News)
