9780810850934: The Great Depression in Literature for Youth: A Geographical Study of Families and Young Lives (Literature for Youth Series)

No area of the United States was untouched by the Great Depression, but the severity in which people experienced those significant years depended in large part on where in the nation they lived. While dust choked the life out of Americans in the plains, apples grew in abundance in the Northwest. Unemployment-driven poverty robbed urban dwellers of hearth and home, while Upper-plains farm women traded eggs and chickens like money.
This bibliography describes the youth literature and relevant resources written about the Great Depression, all categorized by geographical location. Students, educators, historians, and writers can use this book to find literature specific to their state or region, gaining a greater understanding of what the Great Depression was like in their locale. The Great Depression was a pivotal period in our nation's history. This annotated bibliography guides readers to biographies; oral histories, memoirs, and recollections; photograph collections; fiction and nonfiction books; picture books; international resources; and other reference sources. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) state guides are included, as well as literature about the federal theater, arts, and music projects. A comprehensive listing of museums and state historical societies complement this reference. For readers interested in learning about the Great Depression, this is a must-have resource.

About the Author:

Rebecca L. Berg is a freelance writer specializing in children's literature. She has over ten years of library experience, most recently in the University of Northern Iowa's Interlibrary Loan Department. A graduate of Iowa State University, she is a published poet and a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators.

Review:

This comprehensive bibliography of resources on the Great Depression for young people is most notable for its broad emphasis...an extremely useful geographical index...allows users to locate information on a particular state....The fiction section is particularly rich, providing more than 200 citations for fictional accounts of the Depression. Those who teach the Great Depression will find plenty of supplementary material to support their curriculum; fans of historical fiction will similarly find lots of choices. (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

This annotated bibliography offers a wealth of resources to which teachers and librarians can turn to find materials appropriate for youth from early elementary through high school. In addition to trade books and the expected monograph sources, there are Web sites, U.S. Government and other federal publishing projects, songbooks, and some international coverage of this pan-global event....The annotations are evenly written, and the bibliographic information for each title includes the length as well as price and ISBN...This resource is most suitable for departmental use or collection evaluation. (VOYA)

To allow children to study American experiences of the Great Depression beyond those of the dust bowl and poverty, Berg has collected extensive resources about the era, including biographies, oral histories, memoirs and photograph collections. She includes Works Progress Administration state guides, as well as literature about federal theater, arts and music projects. The text includes listings of museums and state historical societies.
