From the construction of Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower to the Fall of the Bastille and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen to Napoléon Bonaparte's defeat at Waterloo to Albert Camus' L'Etranger and the existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre, France has been a part of some of the greatest and most memorable events in human history. Author Gino Raymond relates the history of these events in the second edition of the Historical Dictionary of France.

Through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on kings, politicians, authors, architects, composers, artists, and philosophers, a thorough history of France is presented.

About the Author:

Gino Raymond is Professor of Modern French Studies in the University of Bristol.

From Booklist:

Raymond (University of Bristol) has provided an update to the 1998 edition of the Historical Dictionary of France (Historical Dictionaries of Europe series) that takes into consideration recent developments in international relations and the European Union as well as the entirety of the Chirac presidency. For Raymond modern France stands as an “ideal” that has “inspired the highest levels of achievement in the refinement of the human spirit.” Although the volume ranges from France’s historical origins to the present, most of the space is dedicated to individuals, ideas, and events from the post-Revolutionary era. Topics from the arts, sciences, and politics are covered with great breath and precision. The work is prefaced by a detailed chronology that traces French history from the Roman conquest in 52 BC to a December 15, 2007, Sarkozy visit to Euro Disney. An exceptional introductory essay serves as a refresher for readers on French geography, people, and history and France’s place in the modern world, most notably its position in the EU and as an exporter of first-rate intellectual and cultural achievements. The alphabetically arranged entries vary in length from a short paragraph to several pages for general topics. One of the most valuable components of the volume is the well-organized, 72-page bibliography, which provides further reading for all topics from politics and the economy to culture and science. This updated, valuable reference is a must-have for academic and larger public libraries. --Brian Odom
