9780810853140: Historical Dictionary of the European Union (Historical Dictionaries of International Organizations)

Over half a century old and continuing to grow in strength and authority, the European Union consists of 25 member states―with more on the waiting list―and a population of 450 million people. Its influence in foreign and domestic affairs and human rights and law reaches far beyond its earlier fields of trade and politics. From the initial ideas about integration leading to the Treaty of Paris and the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community to the current reflection on the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe, the Historical Dictionary of the European Union encompasses the most basic elements of the EU and the components that have emerged as a result of them.

Through the use of maps, photographs, a list of acronyms, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on topics such as leaders, personalities, institutions, enlargements, member states, internal policies, external relations, basic theories, treaties, and law, this dictionary tells a clear and complete story about the European Union that will assist those with greater interest in understanding it.

Review:

Students and scholars, as well as the staff of the EU institutions, will find this reference tool enriching and useful. (Javier Solana, Former EU High Representative for CFSP and Secretary General of NATO Secretary General Of The Council Of European Union)

We welcome this useful research tool that will contribute to the enrichment of the understanding of the European Union around the world. (José Manuel Barroso President Of The European Commission)

Recommended. (CHOICE, April 2007)

...a useful accessible dictionary and ready reference. (Reference Reviews, Vol. 21, No. 6 (2007))

Today, the construction of Europe is one of the world's central political projects. But to understand it, people need useful and comprehensive tools. I warmly congratulate the authors of the Historical Dictionary of the European Union―a 'must-have' for all reference collections. (Joseph Borrell, President European Parliament)

Arranged alphabetically, this reference for students and researchers provides a wealth of information on the European Union, from the roots of European integration in the Schuman Declaration (1950) to the present day. Roy gives an overview of the people, institutions, and laws that shaped this complex process in the introduction. Supplemental materials include maps, a list of presidents of the European Parliament, and a chronology. An extensive bibliography, organized by subject, completes the volume. Roy is director of the European Union Center of the U. of Miami. (Reference and Research Book News, November 2006)
