9780810858008: Historical Dictionary of Renaissance Art (Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts)

The Renaissance era was launched in Italy and gradually spread to the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, France, and other parts of Europe and the New World, with figures like Robert Campin, Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Albrecht Dürer, and Albrecht Altdorfer. It was the era that produced some of the icons of civilization, including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Last Supper and Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling, Pietà, and David. Marked as one of the greatest moments in history, the outburst of creativity of the era resulted in the most influential artistic revolution ever to have taken place. The period produced a substantial number of notable masters, among them Caravaggio, Donato Bramante, Donatello, El Greco, Filippo Brunelleschi, Masaccio, Sandro Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, and Tintoretto. The result was an outstanding number of exceptional works of art and architecture that pushed human potential to new heights.

The Historical Dictionary of Renaissance Art covers the years 1250 to 1648, the period most disciplines place as the Renaissance Era. A complete portrait of this remarkable period is depicted in this book through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 500 hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries on major Renaissance painters, sculptors, architects, and patrons, as well as relevant historical figures and events, the foremost artistic centers, schools and periods, major themes and subjects, noteworthy commissions, technical processes, theoretical material, literary and philosophic sources for art, and art historical terminology.

About the Author:

Lilian H. Zirpolo received her Ph.D. in art history from Rutgers University. She specialized in The Early Modern Era, with emphasis in the art of seventeenth-century Rome.

From Booklist:

The years from 1250 to 1648 are considered to be among the most important and well-known periods in the history of Western art—the Renaissance, the era of Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and numerous other artists. Art historian Zirpolo’s Historical Dictionary of Renaissance Art, the lead book in the visual arts subseries within the Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts series, succinctly and thoroughly captures the flavor and significance of the age. A detailed chronology is followed by a 48-page introduction that is almost the equivalent of a full Renaissance art history course. The primary focus, of course, is on Italy and Spain, but all of Europe is included. The main text consists of more than 500 entries covering people, religious themes, literary works, mythology, sculpture, events, families, movements, businesses, buildings, technical terms, and more. Generally, there are two entries to a page. The 16 illustrations are all black-and-white. A bibliography, equally as long and well organized as the introduction, rounds out the work.  The Historical Dictionary of Renaissance Art provides a solid overview. It is an excellent introduction for general audiences as well as a review source for students and professionals in the field. Gordon Campbell’s Renaissance Art and Architecture (Oxford, 2005) contains around 1,400 entries and is broader in scope but does not have an extensive bibliography. --Ann Cohen
