This catalog is an outstanding companion to a very important 1992-93 exhibit of fifth-century Greek sculpture showing at both the National Gallery of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A well-developed commentary by guest curator Buitron-Oliver accompanies each reproduction, and the texts by a variety of scholars are extensive and well written. But it is the glorious illustrations that make this an important work. Of the 34 well-known works featured, 22 have never been displayed outside Greece. Most have been reproduced many times in earlier surveys, but never so clearly. Each object is reproduced in exceptionally clear, full-color photographs. Such multiple illustrations are an unfortunate rarity in books on sculpture but critical for truly examining a work meant to be seen from many angles. This catalog is useful for classical studies and smaller art collections and essential for all larger ones. --Mary Morgan Smith, Northland P.L., Pittsburgh, Pa.

Book Description National Gallery of Art, 1993. Rilegato. Condition: nuovo. Diana Buitron-Oliver with contributions by Nicholas Gage, Olga Palagia, Jerome J. Pollitt, Olga Tzachou-Alexandri, Vassilis Lambrinoudakis, Angelos Delivorrias, Peter G. Calligas, Daniil I. Iakov, and Robertson Davies. The Greek Miracle celebrates the birth of humanism in Greece 25 centuries ago, which also produced an outburst of the creative spirit that has never been surpassed. This catalog features 34 original Greek works of marble and bronze sculpture, displaying the development of the Greek classical style. Though relatively few fifth-century originals survive today amid the wealth of ancient works of art from all of antiquity, chance has preserved, at least in part, architectural sculpture from four great temples of this period. An example from each was included in the exhibition, as well as freestanding sculpture, both large-scale marbles and small bronzes, dedicated as votive gifts in sanctuaries. A series of gravestones takes the story to the end of the fifth century. Essays examine classical art, politics, thought, architecture, and drama.
