Grade 4 Up-- A sophisticated, experimental approach to introducing children to modern art, this book addresses the relationship of art and image, the concepts of beauty and reality, and captures Warhol's fascination with contemporary pop culture. His silk-screened multiple portrait of Elizabeth Taylor, "Ten Lizes," is juxtaposed next to details of another serigraph, "Flowers." The four flower shapes of the second artwork multiply to ten on heavy, brightly colored paper. Children are invited to punch the shapes out, revealing Liz's face on the previous page. Next, "Four Mona Lisas" becomes part of the game. A fold-out section contains images that show Mona Lisa gradually turning into Liz. Then a detail of the canvas is seen as landscape, fjord, and estuary. The last pages offer a few facts about Warhol and the events of 1963, when the title work was created. This volume is an ingenious attempt to capture Warhol's fractured, pop culture images. Children unfamiliar with either Liz Taylor or the Mona Lisa will be bewildered by the connections made, but they also will be intrigued by the adventure in perception offered here. --Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ
