The publication Sèvres Porcelain: Makers and Marks of the Eighteenth Century, while offering records of established marks and clues to postulated ones, both painted and incised, endeavors to be more than a guide to marks. Its List of Personnel introduces the first complete compendium of the careers of some 1,300 artists and artisans attached to Vincennes and Sèvres in the eighteenth century; it uncovers more than 200 new names of sculptors, potters, gilders, and painters, together with information about others who worked in capacities previously unrecognized. A large section is devoted to incised marks, all traceable to individual porcelains in well-established collections. In addition, the book offers the first glossary in English of operational terms extracted from surviving documents of the largest and most illustrious porcelain-making enterprise in the France of its day. It is hoped that future researchers may build upon this information to gain a fuller understanding of a major artistic achievement of France and the eighteenth-century organization that created it.
