For many, the words vast, exotic, dry, and harsh come to mind when the desert is mentioned. Duroc's magnificent photographs and the essays included here don't dispel the myth of the Sahara desert, but they do flesh it out. Duroc and the essayists, including explorers, naturalists, and even natives, try to explain the attraction of the desert even as they marvel at the mystery of it. Why is humanity drawn to regions that are so formidable? Several of the essayists are men who have traveled to the Sahara and have been so captivated by it that they have ended up returning many times or even taking up residence. Duroc has included photographs of several groups of nomads, and two of the essayists are Tuareg nomads who describe the desert as being an essential part of their culture. The amazing photographs of the desert reveal it to be a diverse terrain that includes dunes, mountains, palm trees, and even rivers. Duroc's book is a glorious celebration of the desert in pictures and words. Kristine Huntley
