Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 2-Big, brightly hued pop-ups fully deliver on the title's promise, bringing viewers nose to nose with an elephant, a lion, a giraffe, a rhino, a hippo, and finally a chimpanzee whose head may be even larger than life sized. Hewitt's rhymes suggest just how close the contact is: "If a bristly chin scratches your cheeks,/If a huge yawn makes you see pink,/If your hair is ruffled/By nostrils that snuffle,/Then you are probably facing-/ a HIPPOPOTAMUS!" The pop-ups aren't exactly rugged, but they do fold in and out smoothly as spreads are opened and closed. Younger children especially will be startled, then delighted, by each in-your-face encounter.
