9780810993648: Clinton Gregory's Secret

A week in the life of a boy with a very active imagination.

Clinton Gregory has a secret. Actually, Clinton Gregory has at least seven secrets, one for each night of the week. Monday, he wrestled a dragon named Gordon; Wednesday, he was invited to dinner with giants; and Sunday, he made paper hats for a ship full of pirates and then rocketed to the moon and back! But the secrets don’t stop there . . .

For the daydreamer in every child, this adventurous fantasy is filled with lush details to discover in each illustration. Children will pore over the large doublepage spreads during storytime readings and nod off to sleep at bedtime after following Clinton Gregory’s very busy, outrageously whimsical agenda.

About the Author:

Bruce Whatley is the illustrator of many bestselling picture books, including Noises at Night, which was featured on The Today Show, Ruthie Bon Bair: Do Not Go to Bed with Wringing Wet Hair, Josephine Wants to Dance, and Diary of a Wombat. He lives in New South Wales, Australia.

From Booklist:

As the title suggests, Clinton Gregory has a secret. In fact, he has seven of them, one for every night of the week. As big as a couple of giants, or as small as a magical sea horse, as fierce as a triceratops or as unassuming as a nearsighted frog, each secret is as whimsical and mysterious as the next. Clinton finds himself at the center of his secrets’ activity, folding paper hats for pirate friends and washing the spots off his tiger (yes, his tiger has spots). In rich, full-bleed, two-page spreads, Whatley brings the protagonist and his secrets to life with quirky acrylic paintings in saturated greens, blues, and browns. A close look at Clinton’s bedroom in the initial spread reveals some clues to the secrets that follow; each is a dream inspired by the personal tidbits that decorate his space. This inventive imagination of the origin of dreams makes for a fresh departure from the standard twilight fare that will make a welcome addition to nighttime- and bedtime-themed storytimes.
