Synopsis

Among the tantalizingly unfinished works of the great French writer Stendhal (1783-1842) are the opening chapters of The Pink & the Green (Le Rose et le Vert), which tell of the obsessions of Mina Wanghen, a young, intelligent Prussian heiress from Königsberg. Enamoured of everything French and determined not to be forced into marriage with any of her countless German suitors, she decamps to Paris, where her illusions meet with Gaelic realities. Stendhal abandoned the novel in 1837; however, its seeds are found in the finished story “Mina de Vanghel,” completed in 1830 and published posthumously in 1853. Both works appear here side-by-side in English.

Reviews

Only two of Stendhal's novels appeared in his lifetime: Le Rouge et le Noir and La Chartreuse de Parme. The two works in this volume The Pink & the Green (written in 1837 and left unfinished) and Mina de Vanghel (written in 1830 and later published in La Revue des Deux Mondes )can be regarded as literary sketches with essentially the same theme: a young Prussian heiress fears that only her fortune attracts prospective husbands, and, as with all Stendhal's heroes and heroines, yearns for true, passionate love. Her illusion that Paris holds the key to her dream is shattered by harsh reality. In both works Stendhal's characteristic personal style quickly draws in the reader; an expert translation retains the ambience of the original. With a helpful introduction and afterword.
