Patterned after the classic Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, this series of five volumes will the most comprehensive work on the military aspects of the Indian Wars in the West. The author will gather a wide variety of first-person accounts that are not generally available elsewhere, relying primarily on unpublished manuscript accounts and contemporaneous newspaper articles. Each article covering an event or battle will be placed within its context, with background information on the author of the article, a historical introduction evaluating the article's accuracy and significance, and a "for further reading" list of sources.

About the Author:

Peter Cozzens is a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State and the author of several acclaimed books on the Civil War and Western history, including The Civil War in the West (0-252-02236-X) and General John Pope: A Life for the Nation (0-252-02363-3).

From Library Journal:

Prolific author Cozzens (The Civil War in the West) has assembled a collection of contemporaneous accounts of the military campaigns against the Apache Indians in the American Southwest in this first of five volumes about the Indian Wars. The materials include army reports, diaries of participants, periodical articles, and newspaper accounts. All were selected on the basis of the writers' involvement and their lack of easy availability elsewhere. The result is a comprehensive, albeit disjointed, account of the Apache Wars. Background information on the people and events is adequate, and references for additional reading are given. Lacking are maps designed to orient the reader to the various campaigns, and some of the editorial notes would have been more useful had they been included in the text. These criticisms aside, this is a well-conceived publication for expanding our understanding of the Indian Wars, with its emphasis on hard-to-locate accounts.
