Nearly thirty top climbers identify the attractions of climbing, and share their views on the sport of mountaineering

The title is itself a summary. Charles Houston, a climber, gives a mature opinion on the lure of the sport in the forward. Then 29 variations of that theme follow in the words of individuals who have made a name in American adventure climbing (c.1940-80). Three of these are women; five are non-Americans. A few younger climbers known for achievements in the newer sport climbing are included. Gardiner gives a considerable amount of biography on each climber as well as their own words; thus, this will have some value for the reference librarian. A necessary purchase in locales where climbing activity and interest is high.
