Young children learn about numbers, the months, and animals, in this unususal concept book featuring the encounters of a whimsical aunt with a variety of extraordinary creatures throughout the year
"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
PreSchool-K A loose parody of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," in which the animal-loving aunt encounters "an enormous elephant eating an extra-large ice-cream" in January, "two stripy tigers trying to tango" in February, "three brown bears blowing up balloons" in March and so on until December when she throws a party for all 78 assorted animals (yes, count themyou can't resist!). Although the small size of the illustrations limits its use as a read-aloud, this charming concept book has much potential for use in small preschool groups or for sharing with individuals. The crisp, colorful drawings are delicate and complex but uncluttered, and as filled with detail as the alliterative text: "four feathery flamingos fishing for frogs." The pastel illustrations with large white borders literally pour out of their frames. Young listeners will delight in the absurd situations. In addition to its use as a counting/months book, My Aunt and the Animals can be used as a "pattern" book by those who teach alliteration as a writing skill. Eunice Weech, M. L. King Elementary School, Urbana, Ill.
