PreSchool-- Children are invited to guess the name of the animal whose feet are revealed through a hole in each page. A poem about the hidden creature gives clues to its identity. When the page is turned, the whole animal is seen on another double-page spread. The riddles range from obvious to slightly obscure. The verses vary in length and many lack rhythm. The full-color cartoons are mediocre in quality. The layout is crowded and unfocused, with most of the action occurring on the right-hand page while the verse is set cleanly on the left. Some of the illustrations of the animals are also lost in the gutter. Hana Machotka's What Neat Feet! (Morrow, 1991), for the same age group and illustrated with full-color photos, uses a guessing-game format and is more successful at imparting brief information. Dr. Seuss's Foot Book (Random, 1968), though more fantastical, still can't be beat. --Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI
