Grade 2-4-- Princess Sarah yearns to explore the mysteries of the forest, the mountains, and the sea, each of which she can see from one of her three bedroom windows. But every time she expresses her desire to leave the palace, the Queen insists that she remain at home and orders one of the windows to be closed and shuttered. A mysterious golden lion appears in the child's bedroom each time she is refused permission to leave, and encourages her to escape. At last, they slip away together, to be glimpsed occasionally outside the palace walls. Greaves uses words well, but the point that freedom and adventure are infinitely more desirable than security will be obscure to children. The classic fairy-tale structure of three repeating events is followed, but is rather confusing, and the illustrations do not always match the text. Although the full-color pictures are quite beautiful and the story evocative, these details make the book less than satisfying, and not essential to any collection.
