The Rittenhouse neighborhood of Philadelphia was one of five squares laid out for public use of William Penn's surveyors in 1682. Its growth, decline, and renewal are an integral part of this city's history. Historic Rittenhouse traces in detail the history and development of this special area, reviews the range of architectural styles represented in Rittenhouse, and provides practical advice for maintenance and preservation. The section on architectural styles is particularly good, providing unique examples of period architecture and descriptive characteristics of the styles. In fact, this section alone makes the book a candidate for any architecture collection and a worthy supplement to Virginia and Lee McAlester's Field Guide to American Houses ( LJ 8/84). Elena C. Carvajal, Dallas P.L.
