Surely the range of events, scenes, and characters Dreiser observed as a young newspaperman must have contributed as much to his development as a novelist as the discipline of recording them. Here we find sensational crimes, catastrophes, and stories from the police blotter, exposes of spiritualists, theater reviews, and some uncharacteristic humor. (Since the pieces were unsigned, attribution is through references in Dreiser's autobiographical works and other external means.) Specialists will doubtless find provocative links between Dreiser's fiction and the early pieces newly collected here.
