Dr. Henry Nyren is a cancer specialist at a New York hospital resembling Sloan-Kettering, and his obsession with curing the disease leads some colleagues to complain that he won't allow terminally ill patients to die peacefully. In his zeal to help the afflicted, Nyren breaks rules and is accused by a nurse of performing euthanasia. This first novel by Miller, himself an oncologist, is transparent in its zeal to illustrate a theme: as soon as characters are introduced, it's obvious they'll suffer cancer. Nearly everyone gets sick sooner or later, even Nyren himself. Miller has good intentions here: to explain a crusading doctor's mission, and to absolve him of those sins he's not responsible forand also those he is. Although it reads quickly, the novel's pedestrian style permits little acuity about staff, patients and dilemmas at a major cancer facility. From an insider, we expect more. (December 3

The obsessively narrow focus of a dedicated physician-researcher is the subject of this medical novel. Dr. Henry Nyren, dividing his professional life between his cancer patients and his passionate search for better nonsurgical cancer treatments, has alienated his daughter and provoked daily battles with his more conservative colleagues. A wide variety of patients come under his care; their reactions to their treatment and their destinies are equally varied. This is an uncompromising portrait of the effort, so far often unsuccessful, against a frightening disease. It offers no easy happy endings, but the candid and accurate descriptions of hospital procedures will educate thoughtful readers. The author, a practicing oncologist-researcher, clearly knows and cares deeply about his subject. Elsa Pendleton, M.L.S., Computer Technology Assocs., Ridgecrest, Cal.
