Reviews

This is a convenient and conservative, if not complete guide to 72 investment vehicles, ranging from Christmas Club savings to scripophily (defunct stock and bond certificates). Each is described in 3 to 20 pages under a standard set of headings. These include "minimum required investment," "expected return," "fees," "tax consequences" (which the publisher promises to update prior to publication), "risks," and so on. Purchase guidelines and caveats are collected under "Tips." One of the most useful and also most frustrating sections is "How To Invest," where information/purchase addresses and further-reading advice are provided only infrequently. Overall, though, the work's consistent, well organized approach makes it a useful public library selection. Justine Roberts, Univ. of California at San Francisco Lib.
