Robert N. Pierce is professor of journalism at the University of Florida. From Booklist:
Nelson Poynter was hardly as flamboyant a character as another Gulf Coast resident, John Ringling (see Weeks' Ringling, below), but in the long run he was more influential. From a well-to-do publishing family in Indiana, and armed with a fine education from Indiana University and Yale, Poynter paid his dues as a reporter before, essentially, taking over his father's business. At the Times, he emphasized good writing, consumer interests, and a liberal editorial stance at odds with the conservative St. Petersburg community and with much of Florida itself. With its excellence in local, state, and foreign coverage, the Times, under Poynter's direction, became known as one of the country's best independents--an incubator for famous talent that went on to the Washington Post or the New York Times--and, with its high-tech graphics, it was a heavy influence at the founding of USA Today. Poynter had financial gifts, as well, establishing the Poynter Institute, a journalistic think tank but also an elaborate means for keeping the Times pure, profitable, and independent. If Poynter had significant faults, Pierce makes little of them, but this is about as good as a corporate history gets. John Mort
