Members of several populations lack adequate speech for their communication purposes. Poor prognosis for speech communication could result from hearing loss, dysarthria, apraxia, aphasia, or mental retardation. Persons with one of these disabilities may benefit from a "nonspeech communication mode." Current emphasis is being placed on a "communication" rather than a "speech" orietnation when dealing with these individuals. There is considerable evidence that nonspeech communication modes cannot only improve the abilities of such persons to communicate but can also facilitate their acquisition of speech. Sign language is one of the nonspeech communication modes presently being used.
