Grade 5-8 Sharp, full-color photographs and clear, readable diagrams are the outstanding features of these three books, each of which covers its subject well. How Jet Engines Are Made is the only book devoted entirely to that subject for children, although Jetliner: from Takeoff to Touchdown (Watts, 1982) by Chris Chant covers the topic very briefly. While information on the manufacture of jet engines may not be needed often for curriculum support, the description and photographs of an unusual and sophisticated process will make the book attractive to browsers and those interested in related subjects; the book may have use in a vocational or career-guidance class. Glass (Wayland, 1980; o.p.) by Julian Fox is similar in content to How Glass is Made but cannot match it for visual appeal. Both do an excellent job presenting the many ways glass is used today. Paper (Wayland, 1980; o.p.) by Jim Fobbester and How Paper Is Made discuss the history, development of production techniques, varied uses and the environmental effects of the manufacturing process of paper. Paper has a better sequential development of this material; How Paper Is Made illustrates it better. British terminology is used throughout all three books but does not limit comprehension.
