Reviews

YA-- An uninviting cover hides a wealth of information presented in colorful maps, graphs, diagrams, and charts. Arranged by broad cultural topics such as ethnic groups and religions, society, cities, and industry, facts not readily available in standard resources are presented and compared. Specific topics are discussed in two-to-three pages that are heavily illustrated. The text is technical, but the wonderful graphics are appealing and could be used by ninth graders. Of further help to reluctant readers are the small boxes of data. The last section offers conventional statistics by country. The index is not thorough, and page numbers are awkwardly placed on the side, where readers' hands may cover them. However, this timely, useful, eye-catching resource should be carefully considered. In it, students will see that there is not one Arab world, but many. --Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA
