Grade 6 Up-- Based on anthropological culture areas, these four books give cultural overviews of representative tribes of each region. In four chapters, the authors do a fairly thorough job of presenting the people and their traditions. The chapters on ``Roots'' give some very useful charts that list the tribal groups and the various languages spoken. ``Living'' deals with housing, clothing, food, etc. ``Rituals and Religion'' - discusses methods of worship, while ``Change'' gives almost too-brief accounts of Native American/white relations and current situations. Black-and-white illustrations are abundant throughout; each chapter concludes with full-color photo essays. Curiously, there are no bibliographies. These entries should be particularly useful for reports, and for giving students an appreciation for widely varied cultures. --Lisa Mitten, Univ . of Pittsburgh, PA
