Grade 6 Up-- This collective biography is best suited as a reference for reports. Plenty of facts, figures, dates, and awards are cited. Each chapter is followed by a chronology and a list of further reading. What's absent from these profiles is personality; rarely do readers get a sense of how the character traits of these women affected their careers. The chapters on Margaret Mead, Rachel Carson, and Alice Hamilton are somewhat livelier than the rest, but overall this book perpetuates the stereotype of science as a dry and academic subject. Diana Gleasner's Breakthrough: Women in Science (Walker, 1983; o.p.) covers more recent scientists in a more genial style.
